Google to Drop Exchange ActiveSync Support for Gmail

Sunday, December 16, 2012

For iOS and other non-Android devices, Gmail account syncing is about to get a lot tougher. The Mountain View company has just announced that it will be ditching support for the Exchange ActiveSync protocol next month as part of its ‘Winter Cleaning’ initiative, reported idownloadblog.

What’s Exchange ActiveSync?

It is an XML-based protocol, developed by Microsoft, that allows the synchronization of email, calendar, contacts, and other data between servers and mobile devices. And it’s by far the easiest way to sync your Gmail account with your iPhone…

But unfortunately, come January 30th next year, you’re not going to be able to use it. Here’s the announcement from Google’s blog post:

“Google Sync was designed to allow access to Google Mail, Calendar and Contacts via the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync® protocol. With the recent launch of CardDAV, Google now offers similar access via IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV, making it possible to build a seamless sync experience using open protocols. Starting January 30, 2013, consumers won’t be able to set up new devices using Google Sync; however, existing Google Sync connections will continue to function. Google Sync will continue to be fully supported for Google Apps for Business, Government and Education. Users of those products are unaffected by this announcement.”

Google Sync will continue to work for users who already have it setup, for the foreseeable future at least, as well as those who have paid for a Google Apps account for business, government, or education. But starting in January, new users will have to use IMAP and xDAV.

Twitter Updates iPhone and Android Mobile Apps

Sunday, November 18, 2012

For those of you twitter users who have access to your accounts through an iPhone or Android handset can now see headlines and photos, find out well-known twitter posts and search for a new viewpoint, declares the micro-blogging site.

This new design for mobile brings the content of each Tweet front and center, enabling twitter users to preview photos and article summaries without a tap in Discover and search results.

Discover on twitter.com helps find popular and trending topics among friends and family in a simple stream of Tweets. To see a continuous stream of news, photos and other stories shared by the people, you can just tap “View all Tweets”.

In search, photos from relevant results will appear at the top of the stream to see what is happening from multiple perspectives.

Twitter added three new elements in search: view photos and videos first, see headlines and photos, and understand context.

People share stories on Twitter through photos and videos. The updated app now opens a grid of the most relevant media above the stream of Tweets when searching for a person, an event or a hashtag.

Media instantly appearas in search results stream on an iPhone or Android device. Photos and article summaries automatically show previews on what is happening.

Twitter users can now see context like who favorited or retweeted right there in the Tweet.

These search results are now available on twitter.com and Twitter’s updated mobile apps for iPhone and Android.

The MNP Ban Might Be Reviewed by PTA

As part of counter-terrorism measures, the ban on mobile number portability (MNP) ordered by the ministry of interior has discouraged cellphone users who feel deprived of their right to switch over to a network of their choice while keeping the same number.

Under the MNP policy announced by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, cellphone users could switch to different networks while retaining their numbers. Currently 118m people are using the Global System for Mobile communication across the country.

The PTA decided to ban the MNP on Nov 9 at a meeting chaired by the interior minister since the facility was reportedly creating problems to track down anti-state elements.

Some sources said the ban might be reviewed by the PTA after Muharram, reported Dawn today.

MNP for mobile users and their reviews

Mobile phone users are of the view that how can government snatch the right of 118 million customers to have a network of their own choice since they pay for its services.

The telecom operators should take up the issue with the authorities jointly, otherwise they will be the ultimate losers since they will lose business and the telecom industry will suffer because of continuing directives of the ministry.

MNP for operators and their reviews

Some mobile phone operators have raised concerns over the ban on MNP because it will hurt the companies having limited users on their networks
The business head of a mobile phone company claimed that big firms having a major share of customers and revenue were against the MNP.

The new entrants in the telecom market or small companies are always willing to offer good call rates and packages to new customers wishing to benefit from the MNP. Such measures would discourage investment by the telecom operators.

Why MNP is blocked in Pakistan

As per a counter-terrorism official, they keep people under observation and track them down through their cellphones but now terrorists or other people under observation port out their numbers from one network to another.

Once a user switches to a new company because of MNP the new operator does not impose observation, call recording and message tracking on the number until it is approached by the security authorities.

Solution to use MNP and still keep security measures

As per a network engineer of a cellular company said: Once we put a number under observation on the request of ‘sensitive institutions’ we regularly share their data with them. However, once a customer uses MNP, issues often arise. But the agencies are supposed to follow the number not the operator.

I think the security operators, the cellular network companies and the regulator should sit down and resolve the issue as cellphone use is always linked with terrorism and ordinary costumers have to suffer, a telecom analyst, said.

Update: Mubasher Lucman Looks for New Website After Getting Hacked

As reported previously about Hacking of famous TV Anchor Mubasher Lucman's Official website, we corresponded with Mubasher to know what action he will take to get his website released from hackers.

He revealed that he even knows who are after him to hack his website and if he file charges against them, someone in government might think that he is just blaming them. Upon asking what action he will take if they hack his website again, he said he will go hard on them.

You will get surprised to know that he has given up hopes on getting his website released as he looks forward to get a new one.

It feels strange as mentioned on ProPakistani that his website has been hacked and defaced again today, we think he might have tried to get it restored even after telling us that he is not looking to get it released from hackers.

Anyways enjoy the correspondence of PTETECH with Mubasher Lucman on twitter attached below.

UBL Customers: Protect Yourself From Phishing & Other Scams

Monday, November 12, 2012

Recently a number of failed attempts have been unveiled where fraudsters are emailing account holders of various banks and requesting confidential information such as ATM or credit card pin codes, internet banking passwords etc. Such emails are commonly known as Phishing Scams.

Phishing scams are now a part of everyday life. These usually occur when you receive an email that claims to be from a legitimate business that you have a relationship with, like your bank, credit card company or internet service provider. Posing as the institute the sender would request you to share confidential information.

They might even include images and logos from the financial institution, or a link provided in the email may look like it goes to the financial institutions website while the victim is actually sent to a very different site altogether.

The best way to avoid becoming a phishing scam victim is to use your best judgment.

UBL seems to be on the target list as it is sending emails to its customers to protect themselves from phishing and other scams.

Following is the summary from UBL:

  • United Bank Limited only has one website www.ubldirect.com and uses no other domain or web address.
  • Never send an email or reply to any address other than customer.services@ubl.com.pk
  • Never to provide your login credentials or pin information on any email or link. These details are only known to you and UBL will never ask you for such confidential information.

If you believe that someone is trying to commit fraud by pretending to be a UBL business, employee or agent contact immediately at customer.services@ubl.com.pk or call us at 111-825-888.

China to Become the World's Largest Economy in 4 Years - OECD

Sunday, November 11, 2012
China to become the biggest economy on the globe by 2016 and, in the long run, the second place should be filled by Indian. This is the summary achieved by the OECD in a research of international development in 2060, reported RFI.

From 2016, China will surpass the United States with the leading global GDP, China has overtaken the euro area this year, according to a new OECD model.

Behind China's profile in India, which is expected to become the world number two in 20 years, primarily due to the decline in Europe and Japan, who are suffering from a quickly ageing inhabitants, which will be superseded in term by Indonesia and Brazil.

Soon China and India will weigh more, between them, as all the G7 economies.

However, the hierarchy is turned upside down as it takes into account the standard of living per capita. By 2060, every Chinese and every Indian should see its income multiplied by seven, but the standard of living of Chinese, despite this remarkable progress, still only represent 60% of the standard of living of the richest countries .

And an Indian, it will be only 25% reached the standard of living in the most advanced countries, which in this period will be doubled per capita income.

How to Apply/Remove Disqus 2012 and Avoid Comments Count Override

Monday, October 29, 2012

As discussed previously about adding comments counter below post title on blogger and other platforms. I recently decided to use Disqus but faced an issue related to overriding of comments count. By default Disqus adds comments count below post body but since I was using comments counter below post title already, immediately after implementing Disqus on blogger it started showing me two comments counter one below post title and the other below post body. I tried to remove the code of comments count but it disappeared both of them.

I think I am the first who has learned this to do it on blogger blog because I searched the whole web but could not find any tweak to resolve the override issue of Disqus comments counts. But I was not disappointed what I did that I tried to understand the code and implemented it as I thought. Luckily for me it worked like a charm. One thing I would like to request here that DO NOT COPY IT please as it would really hurt me.

There are two parts and we have to do it one by one. So here is the simply tweak that will help you to remove the comment count of Disqus and keep the one that you need already on your blog.

As always Sign in to your Blogger Account, Go to Dashboard, Layout, Edit HTML, Expand Widget Templates. Make sure you backup your template and save a copy of it.

How to Fix the Override Issue of Disqus 2012 Comment Counter on Blogger

Find <div class='post-header'> and put following code immediately after it.

expr:href='data:post.url + &quot;#disqus_thread&quot;'/></div>
<!--Disqus Comment Count End-->

<font style='background:transparent no-repeat scroll top left;padding-left:0px;font-weight: bold;font-size:12px;'><data:post.dateHeader/></font>
<span class='post-comment-link' style='Float:right;'>
               </span>

Customization for Disqus 2012 Comment Counter

Notice you can also make it float left or right or even center. You can change the font family, font color, font size, you can make it bold or keep it simple and if you wish you can attach an image with it as well.

Need a Fix of Security Issues and Bugs Related to ProPakistani.PK

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

As written previously About ProPakistani.PK SMS Service to get the issue fixed related to late delivery of messages sent by ProPakistani. I am a fan of this site and keep visiting it to observe all the new happenings on this blog. On this post Aamir responded to me and resolved the issue as quickly as one could imagine.

Whether it is related to replacement of gadgets or placement of ads on different places on the site I love it all. I also keep reporting issue to Aamir Attaa personally but sometimes I like to go public to make things social with other users as well so that visitors can also know what I have spent enough time to learn about. These are facts behind how ProPakistani website has become attractive and that’s why we love its appealing look that makes us a regular user of this website.

Above all what I want is the security of ProPakistani to save it from hackers and other relevant people who might broke into it due to the bugs and issues I have mentioned below. I think if I am not going to reveal it, they might not know about it. This is us users who see these issues and I consider it my duty to inform them. They have done a great job over the recent years and all members of it Pro Pakistanis as they write.

Today I have observed that ProPakistani is hosted on WordPress that makes it easy enough to customize things on the site. However also found some bugs and issues which needs to get fixed. Out of no way the dashboard of WordPress started appearing on my chrome page while I was reading one of ProPakistani article today tilted “Telenor Posts 11% Revenue Growth in Q3 2012”

I have pasted the screenshots below so that you can take a look at and share your views what exactly happened.

Previously I have also been looking to see the stats of the site on daily basis so that I can have an idea about how and where is all the traffic coming from on ProPakistani. Being a non-technical on this stuff, I look forward to learn this from Aamir and I am wondering how come thousands of comments are pending for moderation. I think they are spam comments.

Focus in the header bar and look for yourself:

A Complete Guide For Hosted Data Center Services In Pakistan

A Data Center (DC) is a controlled facility used to house full data storage or application based solutions using mission critical computer systems and associated components. The vicinity of a data center caters full control in terms of environment, data and resources such as air conditioning, fire suppression, redundant/backup power supplies, redundant data communications connections and high security.

Why Hosted Data Center is Better

Being hosted means all software and hardware runs in organization’s own data centers, and users access it using the internet, requiring only a PC client, internet connection/VPN connection. Because it is hosted, it eliminates the cost and complexity of building and maintaining a state-of-the-art system and allows any business on any budget to run a sophisticated data center for a fraction of the traditional cost. It can be implemented quickly, and provides tremendous flexibility in the locations and scalability.

Up-Front Infrastructure Costs for HDC

Most of the Hosted Data Center in Pakistan like Wateen Telecom  and PTCL allow you to rent data center functions over the Internet/VPN, with no infrastructure hardware or software costs except initial setup and configuration.

Hosted Data Center Can setup a Multi-Site Data Center

This is the ideal solution for quickly setting up a fully functional, affordable, multisite data center. Multisite capability means clients can log in anywhere, with just an Internet connection/VPN connection-at a home or office location.

Hosted Data Center Saves Money

Hosted Data Center saves you money up front, and ongoing. There is no infrastructure investment required up-front - no capital, no build outs, and no rewiring or cable pulling except initial setup or configuration cost. Ongoing, you don't pay maintenance fees or upgrade costs-that's all included in the monthly user fees. You pay for the capacity you need - no more. And HDC's solution requires no expensive technical staff to manage and maintain it.

Meets The Need to Substantially Increase Data Center Requirement in Future

Hosted Data Center is built from the ground up to scale to your changing needs. In fact, this is one of the strengths of this design. This system provides a truly "on demand" scalability, enabling you to ramp up or down to meet business needs. And, since it offers a fully hosted, Internet-based solution, you'll never need to upgrade hardware or software, or hire IT staff to support the solution.

HDC Service System is Reliable and Secure

HDC ensures the highest reliability by housing its applications on carrier grade hardware that resides in multi-layered security patrolled, disaster-proof facilities. It uses best practices including encryption to secure applications across the Internet and ensure communications with your customers are not at risk.

Co-location and Managed Servers

Co-location allows you to place your server in a rack in HDC data center and share its bandwidth as your own. Once you have a server set up, you physically bring it to its location and install it in a rack. It provide IPs, bandwidth and power to your server. Once it's up and running, you access it much like you would access a web site on a hosting provider. The difference being that you own the hardware.

With co-location, you can reduce your traffic back-haul costs and free up internal networks for other uses. Moreover, by outsourcing network traffic to a HDC’s one like Wateen Telecom and PTCL which have greater bandwidth capacity, web site and server access speeds should improve considerably. With Managed Server Services, you can access the robust, secure, redundant, infrastructure you need, without a significant up-front investment. Then tap into built-in scalability that lets you add middle ware or services at any time.

Managed Storage

Managed Storage Services provides on demand storage capacity, monitoring and management services for clients’ disk, backup and restore, and archive infrastructures in a security-rich environment. Combining best-in-class networking technologies with world-class service management helps enable highly available, cost-effective storage management.

Storage denominator could either me GB (Gigabyte) or TB (Terabyte). A gigabyte (GB) is a measure of computer data storage capacity and is "roughly" a billion bytes. A gigabyte is two to the 30th power, or 1,073,741,824 in decimal notation. The term is pronounced with two hard Gs. The prefix, "giga" comes from a Greek word meaning "giant."

A terabyte is a measure of computer storage capacity and is 2 to the 40th power or approximately a thousand billion bytes (that is, a thousand gigabytes).

Premise Based Data Center:

  • Traditional premise based systems require hosting of all data center equipment on customer premises and has following disadvantages:
  • Large up front investment for data center equipment and infrastructure.
  • Dedicated technical resources required for operations & maintenance of the equipment and facility.
  • Continuous investment required to keep technology current, as technology life cycle is very short and becomes obsolete in a matter of a few years.
  • Lack of quick scalability and provisioning for the customer.

Total Cost of Ownership Analysis:

Premise versus Hosted Data Center System

Return on investment evaluations are most often based on a number of tangible and intangible benefits.

While hosted data center solutions bring a number of benefits to the table, their impact on cost reduction contributes most effectively towards creation of a compelling business case.
